SCULLY AND MULDER SEARCH FOR A CURE TO EMILY'S ILLNESS.

As seen in Episode 5X05, Scully has learned she is the biological mother of three-year-old Emily Sim. Scully experiences a nightmare in which she discovers her gold cross lying on the ground as a sandstorm rages around her. Slowly, she, too, transforms into sand and dissolves into nothingness.

Mulder travels to the San Diego County Children's Center, where Scully is keeping an eye on Emily. Scully tells Mulder she needs him to be a witness on her behalf at a child custody hearing. Mulder informs his partner that Frohike accessed the California Social Services Adoption database. It turns out that Emily's mother of record is one Anna Fugazzi (a slang term for "fake"). He warns Scully that the men behind the conspiracy will do anything it takes to protect Emily including jeopardizing Scully's custody of the girl. During the custody hearing, Mulder introduces a file documenting Scully's disappearance years earlier. He submits that Emily Sim was conceived through a scientific experiment. Despite this, he insists that Scully is nonetheless Emily's mother.

Scully receives another mysterious telephone call. A trace reveals its origin to be the County Children's Center. When the agents arrive at the scene, they discover a thick, fibrous cyst on the back of Emily's neck. As a doctor removes a biopsy sample from the cyst, it suddenly oozes

green bubbling fluid. The doctor is overcome by the fumes and treated at the hospital. Afterward, Dr. Calderon refuses to transfer Emily's medical records to the Children's Center. An enraged Mulder physically assaults Calderon and warns that unless he produces the records, he can expect more of the same. Afterward, Calderon approaches the two dark-suited men at the Dimsdale Convalescent home. The men realize Mulder tailed Calderon to the building. They kill Calderon using an alien gimlet, then assume his form. One of the "Dr. Calderons" travels to the Children's Center and injects Emily with a greenish fluid. A surprised Scully chases "Calderon" through the hospital. But by the time she catches up to him, the alien has morphed into the form of a stranger. Mulder and Scully speak by phone. Mulder suspects the fluid injected into Emily will not cause her harm, as the conspirators want her alive... for reasons unknown.

Mulder makes his way inside the Dimsdale Retirement Home. There he discovers evidence that the elderly women residents including Anna Fugazzi were all given hormone injections. Frohike uncovers evidence that the elderly women all gave birth only a few years earlier.

Emily continues undergoing therapy and medical tests of all kinds, but her condition only deteriorates further. At one point she is placed inside a pressurized chamber. Suddenly, a snake-like creature stirs beneath her skin. Scully orders an end to the test. Mulder discovers cylinders containing live human embryos floating in a greenish fluid. He grabs three ampules of the greenish fluid and makes his way into a hallway. Detective Kresge suddenly steps forward, placing a gun to Mulder's head. Kresge removes the ampules from Mulder's hand. Suddenly, one of the "Calderons" appears at the end of the hallway. Mulder retrieves one of the ampules and runs off, warning Kresge not to fire on the advancing "Calderon." A confused Kresge shoots nonetheless, and is then overcome by noxious fumes. The alien "Calderon" then morphs into Kresge's form and makes his getaway.

Emily slips into a coma and dies. At the funeral, Scully tells Mulder there is still evidence of what the men did to Emily. But when she lifts the casket lid, she discovers several small sandbags inside (one has spilled its contents onto the bottom of the coffin). Scully retrieves her gold crucifix, the one she gave to Emily, from the sand.

Scully's opening voiceover

"It begins where it ends ... (we see a woman's feet walking slowly) In nothingness. A nightmare born from deepest fears, coming to me unguarded. (long shot of a woman walking across the desert) Whispering images unlocked from time and distance. (we now see it's Scully walking and wearing a long dark blue flowing gown) A soul unbound - touched by others but never held. On a course charted by some unseen hand. The journey ahead promising no more than my past reflecting back upon me. Until at last, I reach the end. (she picks up her cross necklace from the sand) Facing a truth I can no longer deny. Alone, as ever." (closeup of her face as it turns into sand and blows away)

Mulder: "I found Emily's surrogate mother. I had Frohike hack into the California Social Services

Adoption database."

Scully: "You got a name?"

Mulder: "Yeah, her mother of record is one Anna Fugazzi."

Scully: "Fugazzi?"

Mulder: "Yeah, as in slang term for fake."

Scully: "I don't understand. Why create a false record?"

Mulder: "Because there are no true records. Emily didn't come into this world through any system

that keeps them."

Scully: "How did she come into this world?"

Mulder: "Have you asked yourself that?"

Scully: "Well, she was born to someone, she... she has to belong to someone."

Mulder: "Someone, who's proven that they'll do anything to protect her or their interest in her."

Scully: "I can protect her too."

Mulder: "Yeah, but who's going to protect you? Emily's adoptive parents are both dead, by no

accident."

Scully: "I know... I've considered that, but I've also considered that there's only one right thing to

do." (a woman approaches Emily)

Woman: "Emily?" (she crouches down to Emily)

Mulder: "Why didn't you call me sooner?"

Scully: "Because I couldn't believe it. But I need you now to be a witness on my behalf in this

hearing."

Mulder: "And I should have declined... if I never want to see you hurt or harmed in any way."

Scully: "Then why are you here?"

Mulder: "Because I know something that I haven't said... Something that they'll use against you to

jeopardize your custody of Emily. No matter how much you love this little girl, she's a

miracle that was never meant to be, Scully."

Judge Maibaum: "Agent Mulder, help me out here. Does FBI stand for Federal Bureau of

Imagination? Am I to understand that your partner along with a dozen other

woman in Allentown, Pennsylvania, was abducted by employees of our federal

government?"

Mulder: "She was missing for 4 weeks, that's documented in the file."

Judge Maibaum: "And you found evidence that during this time, she was subjected to experiments

where ... you say, they extracted her ova?"

Mulder: "Yes, all of them." (Scully looks shocked)

Judge Maibaum: "Can this be done?"

Mulder: "I believe it can, and was. That Emily Sim was conceived as a result of those experiments."

Judge Maibaum: "Can that be done as well?"

Mulder: "I don't know how else to explain it. A medical exam of Ms. Scully would show that she

hasn't given birth."

Judge Maibaum: "You know, under normal circumstances, this petition would be fairly simple. But

I'm having difficulty wrapping my brain around this Michael Crichton bit."

Mulder: "I included this information in anticipation of your reaction and how it might look if you

received this information without any explanation."

Judge Maibaum: "Can you give me an explanation? Why anyone would kidnap Ms. Scully, to

conceive this child, then put it up for adoption?"

Mulder: "No, but the fact remains, Ms. Scully is the mother of this child."

Judge Maibaum: "Not in any legal definition."

Mulder: "Well, if you can show me a legal precedent for this case, I'd like to see it. Dana has

known for quite some time that she can't bear children. She doesn't know why, but

however that happened, that fact that she can adopt this child, her own flesh and blood, is

something I don't feel I have the right to question and I don't believe anyone has the right

to stand in the way of."

____________________________________________________________

Scully: "Why didn't you tell me, Mulder?"

Mulder: "I never expected this. I thought I was protecting you."

Scully: "Why would they do this to me?"

Mulder: "I only know that genetic experiments were being done, that children were being created."

Scully: "Children being created for who?"

Mulder: "For who? For what? I don't know."

Mulder goes to see Emily's doctor, Dr. Calderon, after he refuses to release her medical records

Mulder: "So, I'm wasting your time. This isn't worth the life of a three year old girl."

Dr. Calderon: "I wouldn't frame it like that. That's not it at all. Look, I'm truly sorry but there's really

nothing I can do. (they both stand up) However, I do wish you the very best." (they

shake hands)

Mulder: "Okay then. (Mulder holds on to the doc's hand, then turns it, forcing the doc down on his

desk. Mulder picks him up and starts slapping him) How do you feel now? (he slams him

on the floor, Calderon yells for help, Mulder kicks him, then picks him up and throws him

against the wall) Why don't you tell me what your company's really in the business of.

Huh? Abducting women and stealing their unborn children? Medical rapists! That's all you

are! You don't care if that little girl dies! She's just a lab rat to you! (he pulls out his gun,

shoving it in Calderon's face) Tell me, whose life is worth saving, yours or hers? I want

everything to help that little girl! (the office door opens, security's finally arrived. It appears

the entire office staff is looking in through the door, wondering what the hell's going on.

Mulder pockets his gun and walks out) I'll be back."

We see Frohike at a computer, talking to Mulder on the phone, Mulder's in the Dimsdale Retirement Home

Frohike: "Christina Sherman. Delivered a healthy baby girl September 25, 1994. (scene cuts to

Mulder with a list of the elderly residents) Delivered a baby boy March 18, 1986."

Mulder: "Evelyn Burmeister." (cut to Frohike as he enters the name into a search engine)

Frohike: "Evelyn Burmeister... delivered a baby boy June 1, 1994."

Mulder: "That makes 8 for 8."

Frohike: "Are you at Adoption Services, Mulder?"

Mulder: "No, I'm at the maternity ward."

Frohike: "Any fetching young mothers there?"

Mulder: "I think you might have a shot here, Frohike. Do you know anything about

pharmaceuticals?"

Frohike: "Medicinal or ... recreational?"

Mulder: "There's two prescriptions on their med charts that all these women have in common.

Abbreviated PMZ 200 and Duratab."

Frohike: "Estrogen and pretesterone."

Mulder: "Hormones."

Frohike: "But that doesn't make any sense, Mulder. Pregnant women have those hormones in

abundance. You wouldn't give those to pregnant women."

Mulder: "You would these."

Scully, looking very worried, is watching Emily through a glass window, Emily appears to be sleeping, Mulder walks in

Scully: "She's gone into a coma. (Mulder looks around, not sure what to say, he looks at Scully)

I'm okay, Mulder. It's what's meant to be."

Mulder: "But if you could treat her..."

Scully: "I wouldn't. I wouldn't do it to her."

Mulder: "Are you sure?"

Scully: "Mulder, whoever brought this child into this world... didn't intend to love her."

Mulder: "I think she was born to... serve an agenda."

Scully: "I have a chance to stop that. You were right. This child... was not meant to be."

Mulder: "All right. I'll stay with you."

Scully: "I think I'd like to be alone." (Mulder leaves)

____________________________________________________________

After her family has left, Scully is standing in a church, a small white coffin in front of her, crying. Mulder walks up the aisle and lays a bouquet of white flowers on the coffin, then goes to stand beside Scully

Scully: "Who are the men who would create a life whose only hope was to die?"

Mulder: "I don't know. But the fact that you found her... and had a chance to love her... Then

maybe she was meant for that too."

Scully: "She found me."

Mulder: "So you could save her."

Scully: "How's Detective Kresge?"

Mulder: "He's doing better. He's already out of the ICU."

Scully: "And the men who did this to him?"

Mulder: "They've already cleaned up the nursing home. All the women have been placed in new

homes. There's no evidence that anyone at Transgen Corporation knew of Calderon's

work." (Scully looks at Mulder, then back to the coffin)

Scully: "There is evidence of what they did."

Scully walks over to the coffin. Mulder turns his back, not wanting to intrude. She opens the coffin, finding nothing but sand and Scully's cross necklace. She picks up the necklace, holds it up and shuts her eyes.
