A CANNIBALIZED BODY FOUND ON THE OUTSKIRTS OF ATLANTIC CITY LEAD SCULLY AND MULDER ON A
QUEST AFTER A VERY OLD, VERY HUNGRY MYSTERY.
When a partially eaten body is found in the New Jersey woods outside Atlantic City,
Mulder links it to "The Jersey Devil," a monster whose legends go back to the
18th century. Mulder suspects the recent deaths of several homeless men are the work of
the "Devil," but Scully believes they were killed by a wild animal. Local law
enforcement officials are suppressing the truth to preseve the town's tourist image, even
to the extent of jailing Mulder to halt his investigation. Undaunted, Mulder tells Scully
that a shadowy figure he saw in an alley is a humanoid that has come out of the woods in
search of food. Scully consults her former anthropology professor, who warns her that such
a creature would be higher than us in the food chain. After the body of a man-beast is
found by a forest ranger, Mulder suspects that the "Devil" they are chasing is a
female. Mulder, Scully and the professor track the creature through the gritty warehouse
district of Atlantic City, one step ahead of the local cops, who are bound and determined
to kill the creature.
Quotes
Scully: "Working hard, Mulder?"
Mulder (indicating to centerfold): "This woman claims to have been taken aboard a
space ship and held in an anti- gravity chamber without food and water for three
days."
Scully (looking sideways at magazine): "Antigravity's right. Sorry to interrupt
your serious investigation, but I just heard a story that'd just about take your knees
out."
Mulder: "What's that?"
Scully: "They found a body in the New Jersey woods yesterday, missing it's right
arm and shoulder. They think they may have been eaten off, by a human."
Mulder: "Where in New Jersey?"
Scully: "Just outside Atlantic City."
Mulder: "Not an uncommon place to lose a body part."
Ellen: "Dana, you went through the FBI academy, what better training could there
be for motherhood? Seriously, you're great with kids, what're you talking about."
Scully: "When am I supposed to find the time?"
Ellen: "Well first you have to get a life."
Scully: "Ooooh."
Ellen: "And, of course, it helps if you can find a man."
Scully: "Know of any?"
Ellen: "Yeah, they're disappearing faster than the Brazilian rain forest. What
about that guy you work with?"
Scully: "Mulder?"
Ellen: "Yeah, I thought you said he was cute."
Scully: "He's a jerk. He's not a jerk, he's umm, he's obsessed with his
work."
